MD Delegate Ana Sol Gutiérrez Arrested at White House Gates While Protesting Violation of Latino Civil Rights
Maryland State Delegate Ana Sol Gutiérrez stood together with Latino leaders and millions of immigrants across the nation to fight for access to the same civil and human rights as everyone else living in the United States.
She is calling for Federal and State governments to stop supporting laws in violation of immigrants’ civil rights and to join in solidarity with other cities and organizations in boycotting the State of Arizona in protest of the recent signage of SB1070 by Governor Jan Brewer.
Her statement is below: “SB1070 is a dangerous example for Maryland and for the rest of the country. It creates a culture whereracial profiling is “OK” and forces a dangerous wedge between police officers and the communities they serve. We know police must partner with immigrant communities to maintain overall community safety and to better target those committing violent crimes in our neighborhoods.”
“I believe it is immoral to NOT stand up in the face of a piece of legislation that is rooted in hate and fear. The United States is a country of immigrants – and SB 1070 is an affront to our constitution and the values we hold dear as Americans. It is an affront on who we are as a people. Can you imagine what this nation built by immigrants would be like if our ancestors had passed similar anti-immigrant laws? Today I choose to stand with the millions of hard working immigrants and their families across the country who should have access to the same level of safety and opportunity as everyone else.”
