More than 200 applicants at Dreamers Day Event in DC
On August 25, 2012, theWashington,DCchapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA-DC) provided legal guidance to over 200 Dreamers—young men and women seeking to remain in theUnited Statesand work lawfully under the Obama Administration’s new deferred action policy.
Working in partnership with a dozen community-based organizations, the AILA-DC members met with Dreamers at five locations inMarylandandVirginia. A similar event will serve individuals inWashingtonDCon September 29, 2012, from10 a.m. to 2 p.m., atCarlosRosarioInternationalPublicCharterSchool,100 Harvard Street NW.
The AILA-DC attorneys appearing at these workshops are donating their services, with community-based organizations providing the meeting space and administrative support for these events at low or no cost.
AILA-DC is taking the initiative to put together these events as part of a multi-organizational, collaborative effort to emphasize the importance of seeking an attorney when applying for deferred action.
“The large number of individuals who may be eligible under the Obama Administration’s program for childhood arrivals underscores the critical need to send the message: Be safe and be smart. Avoid notarios and seek out assistance from qualified attorneys,” said AILA-DC Chapter Chair, Peter F. Asaad, Esq..
