Mary’s Center Gets Ready to Help with Obamacare
Health benefit exchange open enrollment. Certified staff will navigate DC and Maryland residents through the new health plan options under the Affordable Care Act
Washington, DC – Starting today October 1st, a group of fourteen navigators, in-person-assisters, and Enrollment Assistance Workers from Mary’s Center are reaching out to the uninsured community to walk them through the health benefit exchange open enrollment. These employees will guide and enroll people on-site at each of our locations and other places throughout the DC and Maryland communities.
Millions of uninsured individuals will be able to enroll in affordable health care coverage but may be unsure of how to do so or unaware of the new health plans they can be eligible for. It is the mission of our staff to provide enrollment assistance to as many uninsured individuals and small business owners as possible so that they can learn about the exchanges and enroll in coverage if eligible.
As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Mary’s Center received over $170,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to hire Enrollment Assistance Workers to do outreach and enrollment into Medicaid, CHIP, and other qualified health plans. For the same purpose, the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority selected Mary’s Center as one of the 35 DC-based groups to receive funding for In-Person assisters, and the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange awarded the Center with nearly $250,000 for Navigators. In total, the Center received $720,000 in local and federal grants.
“This is the best news we have received in 25 years at Mary’s Center,” says Maria Gomez, President and CEO. “For a quarter century, we’ve supported uninsured individuals and families in finding health options. This funding will help us expand our efforts to ensure access to healthcare and reduce current health disparities.” In 2012, Mary’s Center provided over $7 million dollars worth of free care to the uninsured who were unable to pay for their care. Mary’s Center is committed to get as many people enrolled into a health plan, increase capacity and insure a healthier community around our region.
Mary’s Center welcomes participants and the community at large to visit any of its four medical locations to find out about health plan options available to them under the Affordable Care Act.
