Workers Union Joins Mayor Gray and the DC City Council for Signing Ceremony for Historic Driver’s License Bill
Washington, DC –32BJ SEIU members will join DC Mayor Vincent Gray and Members of the D.C. Council on Monday as the Mayor signs the District of Columbia Drivers Safety Amendment Act of 2013.
32BJ played an integral role in the effort to achieve this historic legislation which will make undocumented district residents eligible for driver’s licenses.
“As House Republicans continue to block civil rights for aspiring Americans, District leaders are breaking down barriers by helping thousands of DC residents lead a more productive life,” said 32BJ SEIU Vice President Jaime Contreras.
“Allowing immigrants to legally drive their kids to school, go to church and to the doctor will strengthen our economy and keep us all safer.”
Unlicensed drivers are five times more likely to be in a fatal car accident, according to the AAA Foundation. Providing access to driver’s licenses also increases the willingness of immigrant witnesses and victims to cooperate with law enforcement officers and aid in criminal investigations.
32BJ is one of the largest unions in the country representing immigrant workers who come from over 60 different countries.
With more than 145,000 members in 11 states, including 17,000 in the D.C. Metropolitan Area, most of whom are immigrants, 32BJ SEIU is the largest property service workers union in the country.
