Hispanic Gala Announces “Advocate of the Year” Awardee

The 2016 Steering Committee of the Montgomery County Executive Hispanic Gala (MCEHG) announces that Diego Uriburu, Executive Director of Identity, Inc. will be the recipient of the 2016 “Advocate of the Year Award” during the gala celebration on September 22, 2016 to take place at The Fillmore Silver Spring.

Mr. Uriburu is Executive Director and co-founder of Identity, Inc. Identity is a non-profit organization that serves approximately 3,500 Latino youth and their families in Montgomery County every year.

Identity’s school-based programs target Latino youth in Montgomery County. The curricula for middle and high school after-school programs foster academic motivation and the development of life skills such as leadership, goal setting, self-esteem, and conflict resolution. The programs build upon the youths’ innate strengths, and provide social and emotional support to youth and their families.

Prior to co-founding Identity, Diego worked as a psychotherapist at various community-based organizations in the Washington, D.C. area that serve the Latino population. In 2014, he was selected by the White House as a César E. Chávez Champion of Change for his work with Latino youth in Montgomery County.

Diego participates in several Montgomery County task forces and working groups. He is Co-Chair of Montgomery Moving Forward, member of the Montgomery County Latino Health steering committee, board member of Nonprofit Montgomery, and member of the Latino Student Academic Action Group, and the Latino Public Safety Workgroup. In 2015, he collaborated with other local community leaders to spearhead the creation of the Montgomery County Latino Advocacy Coalition (MCLAC), which he now co-chairs. Diego holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Belgrano in Argentina.

The Montgomery County Executive Hispanic Gala is a 100% volunteer-run event committed to assisting Hispanic youth achieve a high level of education. Funds raised support the Maryland Hispanic Achievement Scholarship Program which provides financial assistance to students enrolled in Maryland higher learning institutions from diverse communities.

The Executive’s Hispanic Gala serves to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month in Montgomery County and the State of Maryland.
