The new Ministry of Education, headed by Vice President and long-time FMLN leader Salvador Sánchez Cerén, has launched a national campaign to reduce illiteracy by four percent by 2014. The government is well on its way, thanks to the help of over 14,000 volunteers, mostly college students, who are teaching their neighbors to read and write in local literacy «circles.» Over 100,000 people, mostly older adults, graduated from this program in its first two years!
The Ministry of Education has called for international support for this program and CISPES is mobilizing volunteers to help recruit people to join a literacy circle in their community. If you want to make a concrete contribution to the people’s liberation through education, please join us this summer!

Since 2009, the Ministry of Health has implemented important new programs to guarantee access to health care for all Salvadorans, regardless of income or employment, while revamping their health care model to reflect preventative and community-based care, and an emphasis on women’s health.
These exciting new programs require a tremendous amount of personnel and supplies, and the Ministry of Health has issued a call for support from the international medical community! On this brigade, we will provide direct medical care to targeted communities and begin linking hospitals, universities, nurses’ unions and other organizations of health care professionals with the Ministry of Health and public health care unions in El Salvador. Join the brigade and lend a hand to this international effort!
