Starting August 1st, millions of Hispanic women will have access to additional preventive health care services at no additional cost under the Affordable Care Act. U.S. Senator Robert Menendez called this expanded coverage “proof that the health care law is making a real difference in the lives of Hispanic Americans.”
The provisions that go into effect August 1 require that new and renewed insurance policies cover even more preventive health care services unique to women’s health care needs, including gestational diabetes and HIV screenings, HPV testing, and breastfeeding support, all without co-pays, co-insurance, or deductibles. Hispanic women, who are disproportionately at risk of gestational diabetes, HIV infection, and cervical cancer, will benefit greatly from the added protections to women’s health.
“Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, millions of Hispanic women now have access to more free preventive health care services unique to their needs, including well-visits, vaccinations, and education, leading to prevention, early detection and thus, lower health care costs and better overall health,” said Menendez.
“With modern medicine and scientific advancements that are unlocking cures and saving lives, it’s simply unacceptable that some women are forced to choose between an annual wellness exam or putting food on the kitchen table for their families,” Menendez added.
