President of Cuban Parliament to Travel to El Salvador

San Salvador, Feb 22 (Prensa Latina) The President of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba, Ricardo Alarcón, is scheduled to arrive in El Salvador on Thursday on a four-day official visit at the invitation of his counterpart Sigfrido Reyes.

Reyes described the visit as historic, as it reciprocates that of Salvadorian deputies to Havana, the first such event in decades.

El Salvador established diplomatic relations with Cuba on June 1st, 2009, when President Mauricio Funes took office. They had been broken in 1961 by the military regime in power at the time.

This visit is a sign that relations between the two countries are getting deeper, and are consolidating, said Reyes, from the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN).

Political exchanges have multiplied as have exchanges of all kinds, including trade, he added.

The Cuban parliamentarian’s agenda includes an official welcome ceremony at the Legislative Assembly, a meeting with the Political Commission of Parliament and the signing of a memorandum of understanding.

On Friday, Alarcon is scheduled to attend a work session of the Forum of Presidents of Legislative Powers of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL).

During his stay in San Salvador, Alarcon is also scheduled to meet with government authorities and FMLN leaders.
