Spellings hits the road for “No Child Left Behind”

From the banks of Lake Erie to the crossroads of America, Spellings’ bus tour will tout progress made by America’s schools and students under NCLB.  Secretary Spellings will deliver the message that the law is empowering parents and empowering students by infusing accountability into education – and that No Child Left Behind is working on behalf of our nation’s children.

On Wednesday, September 19, Secretary Spellings will kick off the bus tour in Cleveland, Ohio, for a visit to Watterson-Lake Elementary School, where she will announce the Empowering Parents School Box to help families prepare their students for academic success.  Secretary Spellings will then visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum after-school program, which promotes science and technology learning through music, followed by a tour of the museum.  On Wednesday evening, Secretary Spellings will hold the first-ever National Parent Town Hall meeting, joined by parents from Cleveland and across the U.S. via webcast, to discuss ways No Child Left Behind empowers parents with educational options for their children.

On Thursday, September 20, Secretary Spellings will travel to Wright Patterson Air Force Base to meet with military families and tour the STARBASE program, a national Department of Defense initiative to heighten at-risk 5th graders’ interest in science and technology.  Secretary Spellings will also participate in the national Jump Start Read for the Record campaign by joining with Americans across the country and reading to a group of preschool children.  Heading on to Cincinnati, Secretary Spellings will host a town hall meeting at Withrow High School to demonstrate the FAFSA4Caster, a tool launched this Spring to help families plan for college financing.

On Friday, September 21, the No Child Left Behind bus will then travel to Andrew J. Brown Academy in Indianapolis, Indiana, where Secretary Spellings will join Mayor Bart Peterson to highlight the growing role charter schools play in providing families with educational options.  Rounding out her bus tour, Secretary Spellings will visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the world’s largest children’s museum, to tour exhibits and highlight the important role of science under No Child Left Behind to prepare students to be the innovators of tomorrow.
