California PBS Station to Air “Coping with Trauma”

LOS ANGELES, Calif., – In response to the wilderness fires raging Southern California, the award-winning series, A Place of Our Own and its Spanish language companion series, Los Niños en Su Casa, will air special topic episodes on “Coping with Trauma” beginning October 25, 2007. The “Trauma” episodes will provide English and Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers with practical advice on addressing fears, anxiety and stress resulting from the heavy media coverage on the fires currently raging in Southern California.

The episodes will include expert information on communicating with children about their fears and identifying signs of stress that may occur in children during and after extreme disaster situations.

The episodes will air Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 10 AM on A Place of Our Own  and 6 AM on Los Niños en Su Casa. More information on local programming and on the topic of “Coping with Trauma,” can be found on the series websites at www.aplaceofourown.org  and www.losninosensucasa.org.

Disaster situations and traumatic events are not out of the ordinary and learning how to calm fears in children and address signs of stress can be crucial to the health and overall emotional well being of the entire family.

“Parents need to be aware that even if they do not live in the immediate area of thedisaster, the constant media coverage on television and in newspapers can lead children to feel out of control and scared, which then leads to anxiety,” warns Moises Roman, Child Development Expert for the series.

“The smell of smoke and ashes in the air can be very frightening to children, as they can have fears that their homes and safety are in danger,” Roman said. For children in areas that have been evacuated, fear and stress can be extremely high, “First and foremost, children need to be assured that no matter what happens, they will be safe,” added Roman.

Produced by KCET/Los Angeles, the series has aired on PBS stations throughout California since 2005.  The programs are funded through the generous support of BP, First 5 California and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Debi Gutierrez, host of A Place of Our Own, and Alina Rosario, host of Los Niños en Su Casa, provide fun and engaging half-hour episodes with parents and caregivers who provide insight and advice on how to raise smart, healthy and happy children.  The series also illustrates exemplary childcare practices, and demonstrates everyday activities to engage children in learning through play.

The programs are accompanied by extensive bilingual websites and hands-on workshops.  Searchable by topic, information is available 24/7 at www.aplaceofourown.org and www.losninosensucasa.org, including resource links and message boards fully moderated by experts that enable childcare providers to interact with one another.

The series has been honored with numerous awards, including the 2006 Peabody Award, considered the most selective and prestigious in the electronic media industry, and a Parents’ Choice award for both the series and website.

A Place of Our Own and Los Niños en Su Casa are produced by KCET, in association with 44 Blue Productions Inc.  The series is produced in association with Sesame Workshop.
