Raise Money for LAYC Simply by Walking!

Saturday, November 21, 2009, at 9:00am: LAYC staff will be out in force for

the annual Fannie Mae Foundation Help the Homeless Walkathon

on the National Mall. 100% of the money raised will go to support LAYC’s

bilingual residential programs that serve runaway and homeless youth in Washington, D.C.

For over 20 years, LAYC has supported homeless youth in our community.

Through a network of foster care homes, apartments, and residential sites, LAYC

offers emergency, supportive, and transitional housing for young adults, teen

mothers, and youth in foster care in need of stable housing and a caring

environment. We also offer all the wraparound supports young people need as

they transition to successful young adulthood.

This year, LAYC needs your help more than ever. Hard economic times mean

that LAYC’s waiting list for residential support is longer than ever before.

Hard economic times also mean that financial support for LAYC’s residential

programs has decreased.

“Funding for LAYC’s residential programs has been severely cut

back,” notes LAYC Executive Director Lori Kaplan, adding “Support for

our independent living apartments for teen parents and their babies has been

reduced by 60 percent.”

With your participation, we can meet our ambitious goal: $125,000.

YOU CAN HELP by registering to walk, asking your friends,

family members, and co-workers to walk for LAYC and making a donation.

Fannie Mae is offering an incentive: If 3,000 participants walk on behalf of

LAYC, Fannie Mae will donate an additional $50,000 on top of what we raise!

Registering for the walk is easy. Go to the Help the Homeless website, click

“Register Now” and choose Latin

American Youth

Center from the

drop-down menu. 100% of your registration fee and donations go to LAYC.

If you are not able to walk on November 21st, you can sponsor youth to walk,

donate to help LAYC staff members meet their goals, and tell your friends about

the walk. To sponsor a youth, simply write a check made out to LAYC Help the

Homeless Walkathon and put “Sponsor a Youth Walker” in the memo field,

and send it to:

The Latin American Youth Center
1419 Columbia Road NW
Washington, DC 20009

The Walkathon also promotes mini-walks, smaller versions of the event held

prior to November 21st. Area private schools can hold mini-walks. Do your

children or the children of your friends or colleagues attend private school?

If you are unable to participate in the Walkathon, you can still help LAYC by

organizing a walkathon at a private school. For more information about

organizing a mini-walk, click here. Public schools and public charter schools have been

assigned by Fannie Mae to beneficiary organizations, but anyone can organize a

mini-walk at a private school.

To donate to LAYC staff members, go to the Help the Homeless Walkathon

website, enter in the staff person’s name and click “Donate Now.”

Your support ensures that LAYC can continue to provide safe, stable, and

supportive residential programs for our community’s young people.

Help us reach our goal of 3,000 walkers and $125,000 by registering for the

walk today and spreading the word!
