2014 Hispanic Heritage Events at GALA
Washington, DC [CapitalWirePR] September 19, 2014 – GALA celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month several events that highlight the work of artists from Spain, Latin America and the United States and celebrate the diversity of aesthetics, form and expression of the Hispanic arts and cultures. The events at the GALA Theatre are, as follow:
- Cancún, a comedy by Jordi Galceran, one of Spain’s leading playwrights from Catalonia, runs through October 5, 2014. This hilarious and daring comedy about contemporary relationships is directed by José Zayas, who directed the acclaimed La casa de los espirítus at GALA in 2012.
- Rhythm and Song: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage, a family concert of traditional songs from the Latin American repertoire, will be presented by Coral Cantigas, in collaboration with GALA, on October 1, 2014 at 7:30 pm. Cantigas will take the audience on a musical journey through Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil, and will include sing-along songs for audience participation. The concert will also feature puppets by Wit’s End Puppets that will delight children and adults.
- Cuarteto del Amor from Uruguay will present a special performance in the lobby of the GALA Theatre on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 1 pm. This free performance, sponsored by the Embassy of Uruguay in Washington, DC, will be presented before the 2 pm matinee of Cancún. Cuarteto del Amor has a unique style that blends various genres, including swing, bolero, rumba, foxtrot, and ranchera, among others.
- Almost White: Forced Confessions of a Latino in Hollywood, a one man play by and with Ric Najera from California, will be presented Saturday, October 11 at 8 pm. An award-winning writer, actor and director, comedian, producer and a founder of Latin Anonymous, Najera explores what it means to be a Latino against the ever-changing backdrop of his life as a Hollywood creative. Najera will be signing copies of his book, with the same name as the solo piece, after the performance.
Tum Tica: una historia de música y familia, a new bilingual show for children and families explores the diverse rhythms – indigenous, African, Spanish—that make up the Latin American beat. Commissioned by GALA and written by Mexican-American Cecilia Cackley, with puppets by Wit’s End Puppets, this entertaining piece runs October 13 to 25, 2014.
