En el feriado del Día del Presidente el lunes pasado en Estados Unidos, un gran número de personas marcharon frente la Casa Blanca para urgir al presidente Barack Obama que rechace el permiso de construcción del oleoducto Keystone XL de crudo bituminoso y limite las peligrosas emisiones de carbono de las plantas energéticas más sucias del país.
Manifestantes de más de 30 estados de todo el país cuya tierra, hogares y salud se ven amenazados por la crisis climática, al igual que estudiantes, científicos, miembros de comunidades indígenas y muchos otros participaron en la manifestación.
“Durante más de 25 años nuestro gobierno básicamente ha ignorado la crisis climática. Ahora la gente en enormes números finalmente exige atacar este problema.. La ciencia debería habernos hecho cambiar de rumbo hace mucho. Pero hace falta un movimiento para alzarse contra todo ese poder y dinero”, dijo Bill McKibben, fundador de la organización 350.org.
“Dentro de 20 años, en el Día del Presidente, la gente querrá saber qué hizo el mandatario al confrontar la subida de los océanos, terribles sequías y devastadoras tormentas causadas por el cambio climático”, dijo Michael Brune, director ejecutivo del Sierra Club.
“El presidente Obama sostiene en la mano la pluma y el poder de cumplir con su promesa de proteger la esperanza de nuestros hijos. Hoy le pedimos que use esa pluma para rechazar el oleoducto Keystone XL de crudo bituminoso, para asegurarse de que este petróleo sucio y tóxico se quede enterrado”, agregó.
El oleoducto Keystone XL transportaría el petróleo más sucio del planeta a lo largo del granero de Estados Unidos para ser exportado vía el Golfo de México. Sería un desastre para el clima quemar este crudo que contiene hasta tres veces más carbono que el petróleo convencional, de acuerdo con los manifestantes.
Indicaron que, además, el presidente tiene la autoridad y responsabilidad en virtud de la Ley de Aire Limpio de reducir la cantidad de emisiones de carbono procedentes de las plantas de combustión de carbón. Estas instalaciones son las que más contribuyen al cambio climático, pero ahora se les permite contaminar sin límites.
La manifestación “Adelante por el Clima” fue organizada por 350.org, el Sierra Club, Hip-Hop Caucus, Natural Resources Defense Council y muchas otras organizaciones.
