This is just the beginning of the legal fight.
NEW YORK, NY — A federal judge ruled Friday that the Trump administration must fully restore the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
In his 25-page opinion, Judge John Bates said the Trump White House had again failed to provide justification for its proposal to end the Obama-era program, under which nearly 800,000 people brought to the country illegally as children, known as «Dreamers,» have received work permits and deferral from deportation.
Cesar Vargas, immigration attorney and co-director of the Dream Action Coalition, issued the following statement:
«Judge John Bates’s ruling to fully restore DACA is certainly welcomed by Dreamers across the country, specially those who will have an opportunity to apply for the first time. We can’t get our hopes up, however. There is a delay associated with the judge’s order to give the Trump Administration time to respond,» Vargas said.
«Additionally, we are still monitoring Texas’s legal attack in the federal courts to completely dismantle DACA. Overall this is just the beginning of a legal fight to come that will no doubt reach the U.S. Supreme Court. From our part, we will continue to hold DACA townhalls help Dreamers apply for their renewals and work with our local elected officials to protect our immigrant communities from Trump’s deportation force,» he concluded.
