Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Department of Health today hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand re-opening of Cottage 2 at the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents in Rockville, MD. The renovations added 12 beds, increasing capacity for the treatment of adolescents who are experiencing emotional, behavioral and learning difficulties.
The John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents is a residential treatment center, and the designated location for the Facility for Children, a program for youth who are court-ordered to the care of the Maryland Department of Health for competency attainment services.
Cottage 2 was renovated to respond to the growing needs of both the Facility for Children and to support youth experiencing hospital overstays with a modern, more secure facility. This is the first building for the Maryland Department of Health Healthcare System that has been constructed to handle high-intensity youth who are too acute for the typical, more open, residential treatment center environment.
«This is a very exciting step for the Healthcare System to meet a priority need for the State,” said Deputy Secretary of Operations Bryan Mroz. “The newly renovated Cottage 2 will feature an improved capacity of 12 beds, six for high intensity youth and six Facility for Children beds. This is just the beginning, as additional construction will occur in early 2024 to open six more beds to support additional high-intensity youth experiencing hospital overstay.”
