He serves as Dean of the University of Southern California (USC) Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and is a Distinguished Professor of Gerontology, Medicine, and Biological Sciences. He is internationally renowned for pioneering the field of mitochondrial microproteins—newly discovered therapeutic targets for diseases of aging—and has published over 350 scientific papers in top scientific journals focusing on aging, dementia, cancer, diabetes, and the emerging science of microproteins.
