WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease will launch the first national educational initiative about atrial fibrillation and stroke risk for Hispanic women, Tuesday, May 14 inWashington, DC. This new national initiative will feature an overview of this serious heart condition, the stroke risk associated with afib, the story of afib patient Consuelo “Connie” Cordova, and the release of Spanish language educational materials to be made available nationally on www.womenheart.org and WomenHeartTV (LINK TOhttp://www.youtube.com/user/WomenHeartTV) on YouTube.
Afib is responsible for 15 to 20 percent of strokes, and women with afib have a much more pronounced risk for stroke, cardiac arrest and death than men. Afib is a serious heart condition that requires early and accurate diagnosis and proper treatment to control it, and control stroke risk. Afib typically occurs in patients who have underlying heart disease. An overwhelming 70% of Hispanic women have at least one risk factor for heart disease, making it more likely they will get afib.
