Annual Virginia Immigrant Advocates Summit

Understanding the many challenges and opportunities facing the Commonwealth due to changing demographics.

Arlington, VA. – Immigrants’ rights and advocacy organizations announce the Third Immigrant Virginia Immigrant Advocates Summit that will take place in Annandale, VA on October 26, 2012.

This summit will bring together immigrant advocates and allies from across the state to discuss many important topics including: Virginia Legislative Update 2012; The impact of Supreme Court decision concerning Arizona law SB 1070 in Virginia; Virginia’s new voter ID law; The economic contribution of immigrant and refugee communities to Virginia’s economy; The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and updates on its implementation in Virginia; Federal and state protections against human trafficking; The implementation of the Affordable Care Act in Virginia after this year’s Supreme Court decision; Know your rights in relation to immigration detention; and a Virginia framework for collective action.

“Our goals for this summit are to educate and motivate stakeholders in addressing the needs and issues impacting the immigrant communities living in Virginia as well as promote supportive networks that actively advocate for immigrant rights,” expressed Edgar Aranda-Yanoc, President of Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations (VACOLAO).

Events like the Summit are imperative as strong immigrant communities are important for Virginia’s future. «Virginia is routinely ranked as among the best performing states in the country. Immigrants play a key role in that success. Large numbers of immigrants in our community are highly skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and high wage earners. When it comes to keeping the Commonwealth’s competitive edge sharp, Virginia’s foreign-born population is a critical asset,» says Michael Cassidy, President of The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis.
