Black, Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander Legislators from Maryland Condemn President’s Trump Sectarian Comments

Annapolis, Maryland.— The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland (LBCM), Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus (MLLC), and Maryland Legislative Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus (MLAAPIC) today together condemn President Donald Trump’s reported comments directed to people from El Salvador, Haiti and African countries and stand as one in their deep disappointment.

“The recent statements of President Trump are not representative of the rich history of our wonderful country. In fact, Trump’s statements are shameful, divisive and disgraceful considering the fact that he is the elected President of the U.S.A. The LBCM stands in strong solidarity with those nations referred to as “___hole countries” because we appreciate the challenges they face and admire their courage in the face of natural and political disasters. We also recognize the multitude of contributions made by people who immigrated to the U.S.A. from those nations. The President is wrong to disrespect the people from those Nations referred to in his hate-filled comments.” says Delegate Cheryl Glenn, LBCM Chair.

“The words used to describe these various nations, including the nation of birth of my parents, were repugnant and unpresidential. They were nothing less than racist. Targeting the immigrant population does not represent the feelings of the people of Maryland or the majority of the United States. It’s unfortunate that the segregationist feelings this president displays continue to run deep within his policies” says Delegate Carlo Sanchez, MLLC Chair.

Senator Susan C. Lee, MLAAPIC Chair said, “Immigrants, people of color and from all backgrounds through their hard work, talent, and resources have built and propelled America to great heights. Their contributions and life stories are the embodiment of The American Dream. His remarks are divisive, hateful, demeaning, and run contrary to America’s greatest ideals and values, and are not befitting a President of our Great Nation.” Senator Susan C. Lee, MLAAPIC Chair.

The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus, and Maryland Legislative Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus, represent three of the five recognized caucuses of the Maryland General Assembly. Each represents and advocates for a specific community, which in some instances can overlap. However, in all cases they serve to better the residents of Maryland.
