CCNMA to be inducted into the Hall of Fame

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has selected the California Latino Journalists Association, formerly known as the California Chicano News Media Association (CCNMA) for induction into its Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, August 3, 2012 and is sponsored by UnivisionPepsiCo, and United Airlines, during the UNITY 2012 Multimedia Convention & Career Expo – the industry’s largest journalism event. This year’s convention will be held from August 1-4 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

«The NAHJ Board is proud to recognize CCNMA’s pioneering work for the past 40 years to ensure that Latino journalists had a place and a voice in newsrooms,» said Michele Salcedo, NAHJ President.

«CCNMA, in turn, inspired NAHJ’s founders to form a national organization. Adding CCNMA to the exceptional journalists in our Hall of Fame reminds us of the struggle for recognition and professional development Latino journalists have had, and, at this UNITY conference, that we are stronger working together» Salcedo said.

«CCNMA was by far the winner by a landslide. The board has never selected a group for the Hall of Fame, but we felt it was fitting considering its CCNMA’s 40th anniversary. It was a great honor for me to nominate the organization,» said Manuel De La Rosa, NAHJ Vice President of Broadcast.

Created in 2000, NAHJ’s Hall of Fame honors journalists and industry pioneers whose national or local efforts have increased the number of Latinos in the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation’s Latino community.

With the induction of CCNMA there are now 29 NAHJ Hall of Famers. Past honorees include Salazar; Ignacio E. Lozano, Sr., founder of La Opinión, the nation’s largest Spanish-language daily newspaper. Last year’s inductee was Ernest Sotomayor, Dean of Student Affairs of Graduate School of Journalism atColumbiaUniversityinNew York City.
