Civil rights legend and People For the American Way board member Dolores Huerta traveled to Las Vegas ahead of the Republican debate to denounce the GOP candidates for their dangerous rhetoric and policy positions one day before the Republican debate this Tuesday in Nevada.
Key statements from Huerta’s events today included:
«We are going to let our community know: Rubio and Cruz, they may be Latino but they don’t have Latino hearts or Latino values. They are traitors to our community and we will work very hard to make sure our community knows that they don’t represent our values.»
«We have to look at the values candidates stand for. Whether or not they’re Latino, if they’re willing to sell out our community, that’s the main thing we have to look at. Rubio and Cruz, you’re turning your back not only on Latinos, but all Americans.»
She also emphasized how Republican candidates stand at odds with issues that Latino voters prioritize:
On the environment: «Rubio, Cruz, and the Republican candidates’ choice to ignore climate science hurts Latino communities greatly. We’re affected every single day of our lives by poor air quality and pollution.»
On the minimum wage: «One of the reasons we have a great country is that we’ve always had a very strong middle class. But it’s being eroded. And candidates like Marco Rubio have said we shouldn’t raise the minimum wage but we know families are having an increasingly hard time living on the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage is absolutely necessary for working Latino families.
On women’s health: «Cruz and Rubio voted to defund Planned Parenthood, even though that’s where our community turns for our healthcare information and access. That’s unacceptable.
