Faces: «Fearless Expressions», grand opening in DC

Casa de la Cultura El Salvador is partnering with Center Arts Gallery of the DC Center, and MedStar Health to bring the exhibit: FACES: «Fearless Expressions» «Expresiones Sin Miedo».

The Grand Opening Reception of the first installation will be held on Saturday April 8th at 7:00 p.m. at The DC Center – The Reeves Center.

The full-color exhibit showcases 14 pieces of visual art created by the group members The Art and Peer Support Group facilitated by Antonio Pineda. Mr. Pineda is a Treatment Navigator at the Infectious Disease Clinic at MedStar Health Research Institute at Washington Hospital Center, NW Washington D.C., where he specializes in helping clients who are living with HIV/AIDS.

The group is inspired by a creative process called «FACES,» which empowers the members to express their various emotions and struggles, as well as techniques for overcoming depression, isolation, and fading ways to combat the stigma encountered by those who are living with HIV/AIDS.

In addition, those who were more comfortable, create a narrative for each of their individual pieces to illustrate the significance.

One member, reflecting on her piece «Night,» describes how HIV has affected her life. «I felt like there was no back to good life, so I need to cover myself so people cannot see what I am going through» – Diane Hall.

The night of the opening there will be a reception and you have the opportunity to see this amazing set of masks and talk with some of the participants and the organizers. These masks make art accessible and teach us that any of us can express ourselves through art.
