CASA Launches Parents-As-Teachers Spring Institute with a Feria de la Primavera Celebration. “Learning Together” Project Aims to Grow Immigrant Parent Success.
LANGLEY PARK, Maryland.- On April 20th, CASA’s Learning Together parent engagement program will host a Feria de la Primavera with activities and initiatives for parents that want to be more effective in promoting their children’s academic success.
Learning Together was first launched in the Fall of 2014 as a critical strategy for improving the academic achievement of students in the Langley Park area. Developed in response to Langley Park’s dire statistics on educational outcomes, Learning Together is a based on a philosophy that immigrant parents have enormous assets to help their children develop but need training and skills to understand and flourish in a new educational system. More than 50 families participated in a pilot ten‐week fall program – a set of courses referred to colloquially as a “Parent University.” Those graduates will be on hand Monday to welcome in the spring semester with more than 300 participants.

At Monday’s Spring Fair, parent graduates of the institute’s Fall semester will provide information about Parent‐As‐Teacher workshops, coaching sessions for academic success, and Earth Day‐oriented family gardening designed to develop interest in the sciences and technology. Parents will be joined by supporters of the program, including the Ascend Fund and PNC Bank. Additional funders include the U.S. Department of Education, the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, and Adventist HealthCare.
