Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino Launches 2018 Design Contest

Washington, DC – Today [ March 16], the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino (FRIENDS) launches its 7th annual design contest. Presented with the generous support of Target, this annual contest highlights the incredible work of Latino and Latina artists across the country and celebrates the diversity and richness of American Latino life. It is designed to capture the spirit of the campaign that will be used throughout many events this year.

“Every year, I am amazed by how many extraordinary submissions we receive for our design contest. The quantity and quality of artwork is a testament to how talented our vibrant community is,” said Estuardo Rodriguez, executive director of FRIENDS. “The opportunity to capture the passion and vision of our hundreds of thousands of supporters for this museum through the design contest inspires us all to keep striving to make it a reality.”

FRIENDS is a 501(c)3 committed to advancing the creation of a Smithsonian National American Latino Museum in Washington, DC, on the National Mall. American Latinos are the only group not represented among our country’s federal monuments; and with the community now comprising one-sixth of the U.S. population, it means American history as told in our nation’s museums is woefully incomplete.

“Our community’s talent is evident through the incredible design contest submissions we have received over the last seven years, and I’m sure this year will be no exception,” said Danny Vargas, board chair of FRIENDS. “While the design contest highlights the creative talents of our community, it also exemplifies the diversity in our nation. American Latinos and Latinas add to the tapestry of our country, and this design contest provides the opportunity to lift up that heritage with art.”

Submissions are due by Thursday April 19th and can be entered here. The winner will receive a $500 gift card from our sponsor, Target, and their artwork will be featured in our national 2018 campaign. For additional details on design submissions, contest rules, and more information, click here.
