California Domestic Worker Bill of Rights (AB 889) awaits Governor’s Signature
Los Angeles– The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) has been flooding Governor Brown’sLos AngelesandSacramentooffices with flower arrangements on behalf of domestic workers. CHIRLA and the California Domestic Workers Coalition is urging Gov. Brown to sign Assembly Bill 889, the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights which seeks basic worker rights for live-in nannies, caretakers, and housekeepers such as overtime pay, vacation time, and rest periods. The governor has until the end of September to sign the bill.
On Friday, the Governor’s office requested CHIRLA to stop sending them flowers although they expressed appreciation for the thought and gesture.
CHIRLA, however, has arranged for flower arrangements to arrive at the Governor’s offices on a daily basis until the end of September or until he signs AB 889.
“The flower arrangements represent our collective request for the Governor to think of the delicate and precious work domestic workers perform every day in thousands upon thousands ofCaliforniahouseholds,” said Angelica Salas, CHIRLA Executive Director.
“We urge the Governor to send a strong message to the rest ofAmericathatCaliforniavalues every worker’s contribution to our families and our economy. Domestic workers deserve basic worker rights andCaliforniafamilies yearn for tools that can help them compensate their worker’s arduous and loving care.”
AB 889 makes exceptions for relative caretakers, baby sitters and people under 18 years of age.
