STATEN ISLAND, NY.- New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed the Protect Our Courts Act that codifies policy to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from making courthouse arrests without a judicial warrant.

«We are pleased Governor Cuomo has finally signed the legislation. For years, we have pushed to protect due process in our court houses even going as far as conducting community patrols around our courts to ensure ICE did not deprive our immigrant community of their day in court,» said Yesenia Mata, executive director of La Colmena Immigrant Rights Center.

«Today New York is sending a strong message to ICE that our courts of justice will no longer be  attacked by Trump’s deportation machine. We are still cautiously optimistic, however, as we have seen ICE resort to ruses and surveillance against immigrants. We have no doubt they will try to find loopholes to deprive immigrants of justice. We will remain vigilant,» Mata pointed out.
