WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Kramer Levin announced today two promotions in its Litigation Department including the election of Washington, D.C-based Ralph C. Mayrell to the position of partner in the firm.
Mr. Mayrell handles complex commercial litigation and appeals, taking a lead role in bet-the-company disputes. He has represented clients from many industries, including health care providers, pharmaceutical companies, food and consumer products manufacturers, venture capital funds, municipal and commercial lenders, and defense contractors. In addition to bringing and defending major commercial lawsuits between businesses from these industries, he has also defended multi-billion-dollar antitrust claims, precedent-setting False Claims Act suits, and high-stakes civil anti-racketeering claims.
Mr. Mayrell has particular experience representing lenders and borrowers in restructuring- and bankruptcy-related litigation. He recently represented a major borrower in defending a liability management transaction at a trial in Delaware Chancery Court, where he cross-examined the plaintiff’s key expert. Previously, he represented holders of more than $3 billion in revenue bonds in defending a lien-challenge and litigating a three-day claim-estimation hearing. He has also successfully defended fraudulent transfer and preference claims, and represented a debtor’s disinterested director at trial.
Co-Managing Partners Paul H. Schoeman and Howard T. Spilko said, “Ralph is an exceptional litigator who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the firm and our clients. We are proud to recognize his outstanding advocacy and courtroom wins and look forward to his ongoing success in our growing firm.”
Mayrell earned his J.D., with honors, from The University of Texas School of Law and graduated cum laude with an A.B. in Social Studies from Harvard College.
Additionally, the firm promoted New York based Seth F. Schinfeld to Special Counsel. Mr. Schinfeld is a commercial litigator who maintains a diverse practice litigating false advertising claims, employment issues, licensing and contract disputes, securities actions, criminal and regulatory claims, and real estate, bankruptcy and restructuring, and general commercial and business matters. He takes and defends depositions and represents clients in numerous arbitrations and cases in federal and state courts, as well as in challenges before the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau.
Mr. Schinfeld earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and his undergraduate degree cum laude from Johns Hopkins University.
Last week, the firm also announced the arrival of former Assistant United States Attorney Jilan J. Kamal, who joined as Partner in the Litigation Department in the New York office.
