Maryland Marriage Equality Campaign Urges Gallaudet University to Reinstate Chief Diversity Officer

BALTIMORE – In response to the news that Gallaudet University’s chief diversity officer, Dr. Angela McCaskill, was put on administrative leave for signing the referendum petition for Maryland’s Civil Marriage Protection Act, Marylanders for Marriage Equality issued this statement by campaign manager Josh Levin.

«We strongly disagree with the decision to put the chief diversity officer on leave and hope she is reinstated immediately. Everyone is entitled to free speech and to their own opinion about Question 6, which is about treating everyone fairly and equally under the law.»

On Election Day, Marylanders will be voting on ballot Question 6, which calls for civil marriage licenses for gay and lesbian couples while protecting religious freedom. The issue made it on the ballot this past summer through a signature gathering process.

Marylanders for Marriage Equality is the diverse coalition made up of 1199 SEIU of Maryland, NAACP Baltimore, ACLU of Maryland, Equality Maryland, the Human Rights Campaign and others working to protect marriage on the November ballot.
