Military Couple to Run Staten Island End-to-End to Honor Essential Workers

STATEN ISLAND, NY — On Saturday, May 23, during this year’s Memorial Day Weekend, military couple Yesenia Mata and Cesar Vargas will be running the New York City borough of Staten Island from end-to-end to honor essential workers, especially those service members helping in the COVID-19 relief effort.

Cesar Vargas and Yesenia Mata are both Soldiers in the U.S. Army Reserve. The run will start in St. George and ending in Tottenville — a distance of approximately 20 miles.

Essential workers, like soldiers in the National Guard, nurses, day laborers, first responders and those in transit, warehouse, retail, restaurants, and telecommunications have been on the frontlines of the crisis and have kept our city, state, and country running.

The advocates will raise funds to purchase meals from local restaurants to deliver to essential workers on Staten Island in appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
