Award-winning tenor Javier Bernardo of Chicago Lyric Opera stars in Emilio Arrieta’s 1887 opera «Marina», staged by Teatro Lirico of DC. Set in a Mediterranean fishing village, the composer’s grand tale of true love between an orphan girl and a ship’s captain much delayed by misunderstanding, was famously reworked from Arrieta’s own shorter 1855 zarzuela to become one of the most beloved bel canto works of the canon. Sung in Spanish, with English supertitles, «Marina» also features baritone Jose Sacin, soprano Callie Schlegel and the chorus. Peruvian tenor Bernardo has been dubbed a «powerhouse» singer by «Chicago Now,» and won a pair of prestigious awards in 2012, including one from the Bel Canto Foundation.
