As we do every tax season, CASA has begun providing our community with free tax preparation services. And with every tax season, come many passionate volunteers who help CASA serve the thousands of individuals and families who come and seek our tax services.
In 2023, 50 volunteers provided over 3,200 volunteer hours, and through CASA’s free, multilingual, tax preparation services, we saved our community members money, and put money into their pockets through federal and state refunds. Overall our positive economic impact resulted in $2,508,506 for over 1,632 community members.
| Through CASA’s tax volunteer services «You are able to do something that is visibly good [for the community],» shared CASA volunteer, Phillip. CASA’s unique model of wrap-around services ensures that when folks come to us, we connect them with additional resources, such as opening a bank account, and in states like Maryland, filing their taxes provides every immigrant access to a driver’s license.
«This is a critical service that I can help provide to taxpayers through CASA,» continues Phillip, «Our clients would have to go and pay somebody to help them with their taxes, or not do it at all and fall behind in becoming a citizen.» Because of our complicated tax system and little to no multilingual resources for people, it is very difficult for many to navigate. This is why it is essential CASA continues to provide free tax preparation to our community members. «I met many who had taxes that were improperly filled out from commercial services. And this is why I volunteer, to serve our community members in making sure, not only do they complete their taxes, but it is done correctly at no cost,« Phillip concluded.
