Activists Gather to Condemn Response to Humanitarian Crisis at the Border

Immigrant families and children’s advocates will condemn the President’s response to the crisis of unaccompanied children and families fleeing violence and demand administrative relief for all undocumented families that is both wide and deep.

Speakers will include people who came to United States as unaccompanied minors.

“It has been bad enough how we have had to struggle case by case for our families to stay together, but now we see photos of children – some babies – lined up like cattle on the border?” Carmelo Santos, a CASA de Virginia member.

To date this year, nearly 60,000 unaccompanied minors have fled their home countries in Central American looking to escape rampant violence and exploitation. According to UNCHR the number immigrants from Central America seeing asylum besides the Unites States has gone up 712% since 2012.

On Monday, the President announced severely steeped up enforcement efforts at the border and declined to implement reforms that organizers have advocated to protect the interests of children.

“We are going to Fight for Families until our loved ones are united, safe from exploitation, treated humanely in the manner I believe that Americans believe we should strive for,” said Gustavo Torres, Executive Director of CASA.
