BROOKLYN, NY – Rep. Gutierrez (D-NY) has recently joined a list of Democrats endorsing Hillary Clinton. In response, the Dream Action Coalition has issued the following statement:
«We are disappointed to see Hillary picking up as many endorsements from Democrats without further elaborating on her immigration plan in general, and in Rep. Gutierrez in particular,” said Carlos Vargas, Co-Director of Dream Action Coalition. “Gutierrez has, time and time again, assured us that immigration is at the forefront of his policies. Why is it, then, that he has endorsed Hillary when there are candidates offering more on immigration that haven’t used the term ‘illegal’ when referring to our community?”
“Hillary endlessly parses her statements, her policies follow the polls and this has shown several times in her statements on immigration,” said Hina Naveed, Co-Director of Dream Action Coalition.
“While we are glad she met with Dreamers and has been sensitive to our issues for the most part, she said that the border children should be sent back and treat us in a similar fashion as the LGBT community: she only really backs us when the polling and new voter demographics demand it, which is why she didn’t get rid of the private detention center money until the media made it an issue. If you are looking to support the immigrant and undocumented community, then Hillary just isn’t the best choice that Democrats have today.»
