Maryland State Senator Richard S. Madaleno, jr. Receives «Public Service Award»

The 2016 Steering Committee of the Montgomery County Executive Hispanic Gala (MCEHG) announces that Maryland State Senator Richard S. Madaleno, Jr. is the recipient of the 2016 «Public Service Award» at The Fillmore Silver Spring on September 22, 2016.

Senator Richard Madaleno represents Maryland’s 18th Legislative District, which includes Kensington, Wheaton, Chevy Chase, and Garrett Park, as well as parts of Silver Spring, Rockville, and Bethesda. He is currently serving his 3rd term as a member of the Maryland State Senate, having first served one term in the House of Delegates.

Senator Madaleno serves as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, where he is also the Chairman of the Health and Human Services Subcommittee, having previously chaired the Education Subcommittee. He is considered by many as an expert on the state’s budget and fiscal policy and has been recognized as one of the most effective legislators in a poll of veteran Annapolis watchers.

He has sponsored legislation on education, transportation, the environment, fiscal policy, government transparency, civil rights, and disability services.

Senator Madaleno also serves on the Joint Committee on Spending Affordability. He is the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Ending Homelessness, and the Senate’s representative on the Maryland State Arts Council. At the national level, he is the Co-chair of the National Council of State Legislature’s Budgets and Revenue Committee, and a member of the Council of State Governments’ Education Policy Committee.

Rich is a graduate of Syracuse University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Soviet Studies and a master’s degree in public administration. He was first elected to office in 2002.

The Montgomery County Executive Hispanic Gala is a 100% volunteer-run event and 501c(3) organization committed to assisting Latino youth and qualifying students from our diverse communities achieve a high level of education. Funds raised support the Maryland Hispanic Achievement Scholarship Program which provides financial assistance to scholars enrolled in Maryland higher learning institutions.

The Executive’s Hispanic Gala serves to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Montgomery County and the State of Maryland.
