More Voices Echo Call for Commonsense Immigration Reform

As U.S. House Representatives Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Trey Gowdy (R-SC) announced their intentions to introduce two Band-Aid immigration bills that do nothing to solve our broken immigration system, more diverse voices have come to the fore for commonsense immigration reform, echoing the need for a bipartisan, broad immigration solution.
The new poll released by Americans for Tax Reform, the Partnership for a New American Economy and the National Immigration Forum Action Fund showed strong support among Republicans for the new bipartisan immigration bill currently in the Senate. The poll findings come as the Sierra Clubannounced its unequivocal support for commonsense immigration reform and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights’ (LCCHR) Wade Henderson called immigration reform fight “as one of the defining civil and human rights issue of our time,” reiterating African American groups’ advocacy for a real solution to our broken immigration system.
The Service Employees International Union’s Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina released the following statement:
“The growing tide for commonsense immigration reform is unprecedented, but also a clear reflection of the American mandate to finally solve an age-old problem that has kept us from living up to our values as a democratic nation. Americans and, as the poll shows, majority of Republicans get that.
“Unfortunately, Representatives Goodlatte and Gowdy have chosen to go against the public’s demand and stand on the wrong side of history with ineffective, piecemeal legislation. They speak of ‘consensus’ issues, deliberately ignoring the real consensus growing on Capitol Hill and loudly calling across America.
“The majority of Americans won’t stand for that. As we laud groups such as the Sierra Club and the Leadership Conference for echoing the calls for commonsense immigration reform, we will continue to work with members of Congress to pass a broad and inclusive immigration bill with a roadmap to citizenship.”
