New York’s GOP Congressman Lends Support for «Clean» Dream Act

During a Town Hall meeting in Staten Island, New York.

STATEN ISLAND, NY – During one of Congressman Dan Donovan’s «Coffee with your Congressman» series, a local constitutent asked the Republican whether he supports the clean DREAM Act. Rep. Donovan (R-NY) responded he was «in favor.» While there have been variations of the proposal, the DREAM Act would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented young people who came to the country as children provided they meet certain requirements like military service or a college degree.

In cities and states across the country, immigrant youth have been on Capitol Hill calling for a clean DREAM Act or legislation without other borden enforcement add-ons, like additional immigration agents or money for Trump’s border wall.

Senate Republicans said Thursday that President Donald Trump ruled out what some consider the best hope for undocumented young people who could face deportation because of him: attaching protections for the the so-called Dreamers to an omnibus government spending bill. Nevertheless, some Democrats are signaling they will force a vote on a stand alone legislation. Congressman Donovan would be one of those members in a competitive election who has been supportive of Dreamers.

«Congressman Donovan’s district, like many across the country, is changing rapidly and more and more constituents are reminding the Congressman that they support Dreamers and their immigrant neighbors, not Trump’s aggressive deportation machine. At the same time, Congressman Donovan has shown leadership by listening to these constituents and siding with common sense» said Cesar Vargas, Esq. co-director of the Dream Action Coalition and national advocate for immigration reform who is traveling across the country to mobilize for the Dream Act
