The system will provide 40 percent of school’s energy needs.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will help celebrate this Wednesday the installation of a solar energy system at Sandy Spring Friends School that will provide 40 percent of the school’s energy needs – or enough energy to power 39 homes.
Joining Leggett will be Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection Director Bob Hoyt; Sandy Spring Friends School students, faculty and trustees; Friends of Sandy Spring Friends School; and executives from Standard Solar, Inc. and UGI Performance Solutions.
Not only is solar energy good for the environment, it is an important component of the County’s goal to promote a green economy. Solar projects throughout the County have fostered over $42 million in investment. The Sandy Spring Friends energy system was developed by Standard Solar, Inc., a Montgomery County-based business.
The new system will produce 665,000 kilowatt hours annually and will offset carbon emissions equivalent to removing about 99 passenger vehicles a year from the road or reducing 1,173 barrels of oil consumed.
