FRIENDS Announce Six Finalists of 2012 Campaign Design Contest

Winner will be chosen by the over 260,000 supporters across our social media platforms #LatinoMuseumContest

In April, the Friends of the American Latino Museum (FRIENDS), the only organization dedicated to the creation of a national American Latino Museum, announced its first Campaign Design Contest.  The contest, which gave the public the opportunity to create the design for use in all of its advertisements and promotional materials in 2012, received an overwhelming response.  On Wednesday, May 23rd, FRIENDS announced the six outstanding finalists and is turning over the selection of the winner to its base of over 260,000 supporters from across its social media platforms and the website. Voting is taking place at: http://americanlatinomuseum.org/contest.

“We were blown away, but not surprised, by the number of beautiful, thoughtful submissions to our first Campaign Design Contest,” said Delia de la Vara, FRIENDS Board Member and NCLR Vice President, California Region. “The six finalists reflect the diverse styles and immense skill of America’s Latino artists.  The winning design will make a significant contribution to the FRIENDS’ campaign this year. This contest has perfectly illustrated the need for a museum that can show off the cultural contributions of Latinos to our country.”

The six artists whose designs were selected represented the diverse communities in which American Latinos reside. They are:
Karyn Jimenez- Elliott from Portsmouth, RI
Abraham Torres from Greeley, CO
UNO Branding (Luis Fitch, Salomé Castro) from Minneapolis, MN
Roberto Valdes from Marysville, CA
Cavi Velasquez from Hudson, FL
GeaVonna Johnson from Miami, FL
The designs, and statements by each artist, can be found here.

With a social media presence growing every day, plans to hold community events nationwide, and a presence at several of the major Latino-focused conferences in 2012, the winning artist’s design will receive visibility from hundreds of thousands of people all over the country. Adding to the prize package, the winner will be flown to Las Vegas, NV for a July 8th community event and fundraiser being held during the NCLR Conference where the winning design will be unveiled.

This design contest comes on the wave of significant legislative progress toward bringing the American Latino Museum to fruition. Leaders in both the House and the Senate have submitted letters of support urging for the inclusion of language in the upcoming appropriations bill that expresses support for the creation of a Smithsonian American Latino Museum. Representative Xavier Becerra (D-CA) and his colleague in the Senate Bob Menendez (D-NJ) led the efforts to garner bipartisan support in the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.
